Yes I know this blog is about investing, but it is also about learning to build a website that gets #1 for certain terms and about how to get a site increased traffic. So don’t worry, there are many posts about investing to come (they are post dated and will pop on in a few more days). In the mean time, I have been researching how to build traffic and come across two opposing and very vocal opinions:
Many of the webmaster forums I read are frequented by online business owners, professional SEO consultants, etc. Every board has a traffic building forum and it is lined with: “don’t buy into the BS, you started a business and like every other business it takes time”.
What they are referring to is getting the word out and creating a customer base. That customer base can be either generic traffic (for CPC) or conversions.
Regardless of the intended usage for the traffic, it is widely believed and enforced, on these boards, that there is NO quick way to build traffic.
My thoughts: I agree and disagree. There are no ‘legitimate’ ways to build traffic quickly. By legitimate I mean that many of these people believe forum spamming, link trading, or even BUYING links to be unethical. I would agree that spamming can be more detrimental than beneficial, HOWEVER, link trading and/or purchasing links from the sources can be VERY beneficial and is perfectly ethical from a business perspective.
This would mean that the ‘legitimate’ online businesses either do not link trade effectively or do not purchase PR/authority. That, or they have found the strategies of supposed gurus to be false.
Then we have the ‘get rich quick’ or ‘build traffic overnight’ crowd. The belief here is that certain information is blatantly obvious and yet under utilized. That link whoring and/or massive link building can produce a HUGE effect extremely quickly. They believe and report that any site can be built up to satiating levels in a relatively short amount of time (weeks to months instead of years).
These gurus reportedly monetize the PROCESS and not the site. However, if it is possible to monetize the process, would it not also be true that the process is effective? Else there would be no product right?
My thoughts: I’m a sucker for an easy solution as I firmly believe that any puzzle can be solved, and when it is, the solution can be optimized and expedited. So I firmly believe this is possible. However, I believe that there are certain methodologies that are withheld. A couple of which I have recently uncovered and can definitely admit WILL work without a doubt but are not necessarily for the beginner.
Regardless of what I hope or believe to be true, I do not have any personal evidence to justify either case and am hoping to have a few weigh in with their experiences.
