Along with my records of how my passive income changes, I will be tracking how this site develops and the steps I am taking to have it begin generating revenue. I will be learning as I go so this will be a great way to keep track of what works and what does not.
Here is a list of what I have done to date:
7/11/08 - domain and hosting purchase
7/12-7/15/08 - researched keywords and decided on three keyword sets for my primary. they breakdown like so:
term1 - 529 daily searches, average competing PR - 0, and specific search competitors of 104k
term2 - 794 daily searches, average competing PR - 0, and specific search competitors of 27k
term3 - 578 daily searches, average competing PR - 0, and specific search competitors of 5.1 million (ouch)
Term 1 and Term 2 should be cake (supposedly) and would bring me a combined total 1323 organic visits a day. Term 3 has a lot of competition, but LITTLE authority, so a decent ranking for that term should not be tough and would raise my organic traffic to 1900 a day. Assuming a proper monetization, achieving number 1 spot for all three (no other sources of traffic) would earn me about 10$/day or 3.5k/year. It’s a start.
7/16/08 - the site was available on my host and I began setting it up. This meant installing wordpress since I knew this would be a blog. This site is currently hosted on Dreamhost so wordpress was a breeze to install. Once it was up I scanned through the SEO templates available on Courtney Tuttle’s site and chose dateless sniper and by the end of the day I had wordpress up with my chosen theme and a place holder first post detailing my problems getting Google Checkout to make payment.
7/17 through 7/19/08 - I began playing with Adsense. I spent most of the day and the next three days getting it placed correctly since I was unfamiliar with the wordsense code. Once I was familiar with things, placing the ads where and how I wanted them was relatively easy. I also wrote roughly 5 posts and post dated the entries to provide content WHILE I learned the next steps.
7/20/08 - Read on Griz’s site about posting to directories and article submissions. Combining his post with Courtney’s, I devised a plan to submit to as many feeds and article directories as possible.
7/21 through 7/22/08 - I submitted my blog to as many of the following blog/rss feeds as I could (some of them were not english or were broken), creating accounts along the way. This was extremely tedious and so far I am seeing little results from the submissions. Here is the list I used:

7/24/08 - So far I am not seeing any increase in traffic. Analytics shows a grand total of about 8 visitors for yesterday. A whole whopping ONE visitor higher than the day before. I still need to submit this site to directories, get listed on some blog carnivals, get .edu or gov links, and do some link trading. I will be also email a few of the blogs I read and see if they can give me some pointers. Something must have gone wrong with the submissions, that or I am just incredibly impatient.
